I Killed Maria Goretti: The Life and Repentance of Alessandro Serenelli by Pietro Di Donato. Sophia Institute Press (Manchester, NH, 2025). 192 pp., paperback. $18.95.
Is it possible to truly forgive the most unspeakable crimes? This true story is a testament not only to the astonishing conversion of an unrepentant murderer but the even more miraculous forgiveness of his eleven-year-old victim, St. Maria Goretti, and her family.
I Killed Maria Goretti by American novelist Pietro Di Donato begins by delving into the early life of Alessandro Serenelli, St. Maria’s attacker, with its disturbing influences and his consequent grim motives. It offers readers a close look at the shocking thought process of Serenelli due, in part, to his exposure to immoral literature and pornography. Then, it recounts Serenelli’s horrific crime and hardness of heart, followed by his astonishing story of repentance.
St. Maria Goretti, whose feast day we celebrate on July 6, is a patroness of youth, children of Mary, and abused children. Since her family was impoverished, they lived with a farmer and worked for him. Maria’s father died when she was only nine. Her mother was left to work in the fields and Maria took care of her younger siblings and the domestic chores. Maria was very beautiful and the farmer’s son kept trying to make her sin against purity.
Through the lens of historical events, recounted as a stirring narrative, readers will learn of Maria’s life of great holiness, sacrifice, and intercessory power, which ultimately aided—even after her death—in Alessandro’s salvation.
Remarkably, readers will discover how the light of grace is ever-present, especially in life’s darkest moments. Before her death, Maria forgave Alessandro, saying: “Yes, for the love of Jesus I forgive him . . . and I want him to be with me in Paradise.”
In penning this book, Di Donato reflects on his meetings with Ersilia, St. Maria’s sister, friars who lived with Serenelli at the end of his life, and Serenelli himself.
In 1950, Maria was canonized and her mother, who was present, sat next to Alessandro. A quarter of a million people attended the Mass. This book offers her story from a fresh perspective and reveals a love stronger than death. Through the life-changing encounter that led to Alessandro’s conversion, readers will learn about the courageous little girl who taught the world how to live and die rather than sin.
Reflection questions are also included for individuals or groups. This book contains some graphic scenes and is best for mature readers.
