IVF is Not the Way: The False Promises of Artificial Procreation by Stacy Trasancos. Sophia Institute Press (Manchester, NH, 2025). 256 pp., paperback. $18.95.
In vitro fertilization has recently garnered media attention with President Donald Trump’s executive order for a domestic review of our country’s policy. As his administration’s plan to expand access to IVF is expected any day, there remains a lot of confusion about what IVF entails and the possible ramifications of this treatment. Additionally, it is a reminder of the need to provide greater availability for Restorative Reproductive Medicine, which is more cost effective and devoid of ethical issues.
In IVF is Not the Way, Dr. Stacy Trasancos presents comprehensive scientific research, philosophical principles, theological teachings, and real-life stories to assist readers in understanding the dangers of IVF.
Trasancos shared about her new book in her recent blog post, saying, “I lay out the argument that ‘IVF is Not the Way’ in a 10-premise chain syllogism using the clear logic, sound philosophy, and magisterial wisdom of the Church. The book is meant as a tool to help you understand the argument and engage others in conversation about IVF.”
This book allows readers to evaluate the way IVF works and the ethical considerations about using this treatment. It is a comprehensive resource that individuals, schools, and Churches will find beneficial. Throughout, Trasancos answers a range of pivotal questions, including:
-What are the principles that help evaluate the morality of IVF?
-What does the Church say about IVF?
-What rights do human embryos possess?
-How do we love embryonic children?
Through riveting case studies, Dr. Trasancos shares how children are a gift and that every human has a right to be loved.
“Make no mistake: the Church rejects IVF as morally illicit,” states Trasancos. “But the teaching might surprise you in that it is not at all a ‘no’ to children but a ‘yes’ to your gifts and the rights that all children, including you, are owed, namely LOVE.”
Hence, despite the seriousness of the topic, IVF is Not the Way ultimately leaves the reader with hope—both for those who have used IVF and for those who are seeking to have a child with other therapies available.
The book is endorsed by Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, and Charles C. Camosy, professor of medical humanities at the Creighton University School of Medicine.
