Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. A Declaration of Dependence. Manchester, NH: Sophia Institute Press, 2022. Paperback $15.95. Ebook $9.99. Available from the publisher.
“Why is America at the threshold of its own implosion?” asks Dr. Peter Howard, founder of the Fulton Sheen Institute. “The American prophet for our times, Fulton Sheen, provides the answer.”
We are bombarded daily by news of violent crimes and senseless hatred. Among the travesties of our time is the abandonment of God in our society. There seems to be a campaign to destroy the faith in many of our schools, as well as through political and media propaganda.
In A Declaration of Dependence, Sheen lays out what it means to be truly free. These pages provide answers about:
- The true meaning of tolerance and how it relates to our present plight
- What enemy we should truly fear and how to overcome it by God’s grace
- Why God is not to blame for the world’s situation
- How the stage is set for freedom to be lost
- Whether or not restoration of our country is still possible
In an age of Liberalism, man has forgotten the justice of God. As Sheen wrote in his book Way to Happiness:
“The higher the building the deeper the foundation; the greater the moral heights to which we aspire the greater the humility. . . . Modern man has been humiliated: neither his proud expectations of progress nor of science have turned out as he hoped. Yet he has not quite reached the point of humbling himself. He is still imprisoned in the self, and able to see nothing else beyond. The psychoanalyst may be allowed to bore into his thoughts for a few years more; but the time is not far off when modern men will utter a frantic appeal to God to lift them from the empty cistern of their own egos.”
A Declaration of Dependence builds upon this notion. Sheen explains how to place our trust in God, Who is love, and implore His loving mercy. It is only by seeking God’s face and taking refuge in His protection, that we will enjoy true liberty again.
