Take a deep breath. Let’s restate it again. But only with those who have ears.
It’d be good to explain this from the point of a relationship, as that’s the real reason for this.
In one sense, no one is deserving of the incredible gift of the Eucharist. The gift is the death and obedience of Christ in the flesh for our salvation. To drink and eat this sacrifice is to seek to internalize the very gift of His unselfish-death, and the obedience to His Father’s will. We are to eat and drink obedience, and His life given to us through His death. When we reflect on the gratuity of this gift, we must in all sincerity emphasize that it is as such unmerited.
In another sense we can all say there is a way to approach this gift in a manner that is disrespectful to the sacredness or beauty of it. If a husband were to approach his wife to consummate his marriage through abuse, rape, manipulation, or even simply using her to gratify himself, one might say “But it’s his wife, he has a right to sex with her.” But such a person would rightly be put punished, since the act of sex is meant to not be a meal, but an act of love between two persons. Perhaps that’s the problem…respecting the Person of Christ doesn’t seem to be part of the equation here. If the Eucharist is about a relationship, then it must take the center stage here.
In the Eucharist the bride and the Groom become one, In such an intimate way. For a bride to murder the sanctifying grace within the soul, is to re-crucify Christ Spiritual, making any external act of receiving Christ dissonant with the interior disposition.
So I can conclude of only two reasons why someone would think that there be no unworthy way to approach the Sacrament. Either they see their sin as worthy of respect and approval, or that the Eucharist is not that important as to consummate our relationship with Christ in a spiritual marriage. In either case, it’s horrible to think of.
