Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the holocaust and wood, and licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell on their faces. ‘The Lord is God,’ they cried, ‘the Lord is God.’
~ 1 Kings 18:38-39
If a miraculous sign such as ‘fire raining down from Heaven’ was seen today, would the people of our time immediately bow their heads in fear and worship the Lord, as the ancient people did? My guess is the answer would be no.
It is sad, but we as a people have grown so hardhearted and lost our fear of the divine. Our faith now lies in science and technology, and beneath all that, a firm belief that man alone holds the answer to all things, that eventually man will find an answer to all the questions in the world. When such a dangerous philosophy is internalised, our fear of the Lord is naturally lost, because we begin to see God as fiction, and we dismiss His existence and role in our lives. Why do we need God if we believe we can find all the answers ourselves?
Furthermore, the sadder news is that Christ had already come and died for us. However, instead of growing stronger in Faith, it seems that the world’s faith has grown weaker. Lord help us, heal and harden not our hearts!
