As we celebrate the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Fr. Michael Coutts S.J. invited us to look at Jesus, whose side was pierced with a lance.

He encouraged us to consider the resemblance of the Heart of Jesus to a human heart.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a human heart like yours and mine.
A heart that experienced everything that you and I experience.
A heart that experienced joy and gladness, and even happiness with His companions and friends.
By the same token, it was also a heart that had been broken so very often like yours and mine.
It was a heart that had experienced sadness. A sadness even unto death on the Cross.
A heart that experienced loneliness when He asked His disciples, “Are you also going to leave Me?”
A heart that experienced betrayal and denial by the very disciples He trusted.
As His heart experienced all the feelings that you and I experience, we can reach out to this human heart of Jesus which is also the heart of the Divine Son of God.
