Crystalina Evert. Women Made New!: Reflections on Adversity, Transformation, and Healing. Manchester, NH: Sophia Institute Press, 2022. Hardcover $21.95. 240 pages. Available from the publisher.
Awhile back I was talking with a friend and she remarked how common it is for women to always feel pressured to do more or be more because they worry they aren’t enough.
In Women Made New!: Reflections on Adversity, Transformation, and Healing, Crystalina Evert—bestselling author, international speaker, and founder of Women Made New Ministries—cuts through the lies that the world, the flesh, and the devil try to sell women. Through her own testimony and the stories of twelve other women, Evert encourages readers with the truth of God’s love for them and their awesome dignity as daughters of God.
Evert challenges and encourages readers in her first chapter: “Have you reached a point where you’ve had enough of being consumed by the trappings of the world? Are you ready to go deep? Are you willing to detach from old ways and take on the new? What virtues would you like to trade for the vices you struggle with? Without a shadow of a doubt, do you believe you were created for so much more? Do you believe God can transform your life and make you whole again?”
Women will be inspired by the personal testimonies of Mother Angelica, Teresa Tomeo, Catherine Hadro, Johnnette Benkovic-Williams, Dr. Kimberly Scipione, and Joy Pinto. Through their powerful voices, readers will see how they battled and overcame obstacles from poverty or burnout to perfectionism and loss of faith. Each experienced healing and conversion, whether from some sort of abuse or disordered self-image, a broken home, family or career challenges.
One of my favorite highlights in the book includes a variety of short, powerful Scripture passages that women can use to refute the enemy’s lies when he attacks us with negative thoughts about ourselves or our relationship with God. Evert also includes an extensive list of strategies to help arm oneself in the spiritual battle and find authentic freedom.
Additional chapters include stories about recovering from traumas such as abuse and divorce, and discovering the security of Our Father’s unending love. Examples of celebrated women saints are also showcased such as Teresa of Avila and Joan of Arc, along with ways to experience the healing power of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.
Reviewers commented on her writing: “Whatever your wounds are, Crystalina’s wisdom will speak to it.” “Crystalina does a great job at describing how to heal from trauma and gives you excellent pointers on how to start over.”
In these powerful pages, women will see that they have a purpose in the Father’s design, even in times of pain; Jesus came to enter into our sufferings and redeem us by His love. Even in our darkest or most shame-filled moments there is hope for new life with Him—starting now.
