Peter spoke up and said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will make three tents; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
~ Matthew 17:1-9 (excerpt)
Peter wanted to stay there. How often have I felt the same way as I sat in the pews gazing up at Jesus on the Cross, dwelling in the tabernacle, surrounding and embracing me there in church? I wanted to stay there.
But just like that moment of the Transfiguration on the hill thousands of years ago, we are reminded that “our transfiguration does not happen on a hill in momentary glory. It happens daily as Jesus lives in us.” (Daily Gospel 2020 by Fr. Anscar J. Chupungco, OSB)
We are called to leave the emotional high and comfort of those hilltop encounters and go out into the world. By living our daily, mundane and seemingly ordinary day-to-day lives with and for Jesus, we can by faithfulness change our lives and that of others.
I’ve had people change me just from their humble example. They’re not doing anything particularly special, just living their life in stunning service to Our Lord. So as much I would have liked to remain there, fingers linked, alone in that simple church on a hill with Jesus, I must always have the courage to leave and live.
